JUNIOR

At Craighead Graphics is part of Technology education and is an option subject, you will hear some schools call it DVC or Design & Visual Communication, but we call it Graphics! It encompasses skills that your parents might have done (called tech drawing) plus other creative drawing methods while often working through a design brief to design an outcome or solve a problem. To study graphics at Craighead you have to select it on your option form to take the class.

At year 9 it runs for 3 lessons a week for a whole year. At year 10 it runs for 4 lessons a week for the whole year- it is preferable that you take it in year 9 to do it in year 10 and preferable that you have taken it in year 10 to continue on at NCEA level- it really helps your skills.

Graphics education provides so many skills future employers are looking for, it teaches you how to think creatively and how to be a problem solver. The main topics that are covered are: a sound base of drawing and visual communication techniques, how to use technical drawing information, equipment and systems based around drawing practice, Product/Industrial Design, Spatial, Architectural and Environmental Design. It draws on finding information out about user needs and on your own individual strengths to solve problems by visually communicating their thinking.

Graphics is an exciting vibrant subject that gives you a practical approach to creative and critical thinking. Take some time and look through the public parts of the website- it showcases what we get up to. I Hope you enjoy!

Graphics is an exciting vibrant subject that gives you a practical approach to creative and critical thinking. Graphics education provides so many skills future employers are looking for, it teaches you how to think creatively and how to be a problem solver.

At year 11 it runs for 4 lessons a week for a whole year. At year 12 and 13 it runs for 4 or 5 (this depends on student numbers) lessons a week for the whole year.

As senior it is preferable that you have completed some study in the junior school but if this really looks like your thing- come have a chat with me.

In the senior school assessment is ongoing throughout the year by submission of portfolios at the end of each unit.

Projects cover the three strands: Graphics Practice, Design Practice and Visual Communication.

This year we have completed work in the following contexts:

  • Architectural/Spatial design: Year 11-shop design, Year 12-outdoor sculptural spaces, Year 13 individual retail spaces

  • Product design: Year 11-furniture, Year 12 & 13- Lighting

  • Design presentation- Photoshop and design exhibition

  • Sketching, drawing and media application

  • Study of a designer or design era

As well as context specific work skills are really important and we concentrate on: developing a sound base of drawing and visual communication techniques, how to use technical drawing information, use of equipment and systems based around drawing practice. We draw on finding information out about user needs and on girls own individual strengths to solve problems by visually communicating their thinking.

Take some time and look through the public parts of the website- it showcases what we get up to. I Hope you enjoy!
